BACKGROUND: Prior to June 2009, the practice was to use the Special Projects course (xxx298AA, AB, AC) and an Independent Study form for students who needed special accommodations to complete a course to meet program requirements and/or other learning objectives. Concerns/issues regarding Special Projects vs. Independent Study sections in relation to the schedule building process were identified. Upon discussion with the Vice President of Academic Affairs and the Deans, it was determined that rather than using the courses of Special Projects and the Special Projects-Independent Study form, if the student needed special accommodations to complete a course, a new class would be created as follows: Actual 298 module or Actual course needed by the student to complete degree or certificate in term requested The new Student Information System (SIS) allows the Instruction Mode of IS=Independent Study. The use of the Special Projects courses (298s) and actual course are defined for schedule building purposes and procedures. Contact Instructional Support Services (ISS) for details. OUTCOME: The Administration approved the development and implementation of procedures to be applied for Special Projects courses delivery. PROCEDURES AND CRITERIA: Special Projectsstudents seeking skills and knowledge in a field of interest not available through the delivery of existing courses. The appropriate disciplines 298 course module will be requested via the COM process for approval and delivery. (Modules are LABs; AA=1 Credit 1 Period; AB=2 credits 2 Periods; and AC=3 Credits 3 Periods; Load Formula=Zero) A COM request will be submitted by the Department Chair/Program Director for the creation of a new class in SIS Contact ISS for details.
