ұ to Host an Engaging Virtual Discussion Honoring the Constitution Day
PHOENIX, September 14, 2020 — The United States Constitution was signed 233 years ago on Sept. 17,1787. To recognize the importance of both Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, ұ will be hosting a virtual event on the topic, “The Constitution and the Right to Equal Treatment in Arizona.”
An esteemed panel of guest speakers will discuss topics ranging from the relevance of the Constitution, to current issues we are confronting today, including the pandemic, the resulting economic problems, and the hope for political solutions to current issues.
"We're proud to offer the best of ұ on Constitution and Citizenship Day – two distinguished alumni as panel speakers, and Dr. Celoza, Liberal Arts Faculty awarded Arizona Professor of the Year,” said Dr. Larry Johnson, ұ president. “State Senator Juan Mendez was a student at ұ in the early 2000s and he has served in the Arizona House of Representatives and the Senate. Mary Dolores Guerra, a student in the 1990's, currently teaches History and Political Science and is a doctoral student at Arizona State University. Both Mendez and Guerra were active in the Model United Nations and other political activities on campus."
According to Senator Mendez, "The people need to be active participants in shaping the Constitution as a dynamic political document. We need to make use of this document to respond to the people's needs and goals. It would be unfortunate for us to be ruled by an autocracy. We need to have a government that works for all of us."
During the presentation, students and the community will learn basic information about the Constitution and gain perspective about how the oldest living constitution in the world has shaped American society. The fact that general elections will be held this November is another reason the session aims to encourage the public to uphold their civic duties and vote.
The Zoom discussion will take place from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 17. The link to the virtual event, which is open to the public is: .
